Aberdeen Harbour Board signs contract to expand its port facilities
Work is due to begin in Spring 2017 on the expansion of Nigg Bay, to the south of the existing harbour. Target completion is set for summer 2020.
“We are delighted that, after six years of detailed planning and extensive consultation with our many stakeholders and the regulatory authorities, we are now in a position to approve commencement of construction,” said Aberdeen Harbour Board chief executive Colin Parker.
This project will include creating an additional 1,400 metres of new quay, with a water depth of up to 10.5 metres. This will allow Aberdeen Harbour to accommodate larger ships, affording existing customers the opportunity to diversify and grow.
It is hoped that the expansion will also attract new customers to the port, including a more significant share of the available cruise ship vessels and large commercial vessels.
“We believe that the infrastructure developed in Nigg Bay will encourage and support the continued prosperity of the city and region that the harbour serves and make a significant national economic contribution” stated Aberdeen Harbour Board chairman Alistair Mackenzie.
