The Construction Alliance Northeast (CAN), a group formed to support the North East region’s construction sector, has welcomed news that local contractors are involved in a £96m framework to build highways in the region.
The North East Procurement Organisation (NEPO), in partnership with the North East Highways Alliance, has entered into a four-year framework agreement with thirteen successful contractors.
The collaborative agreement, led on behalf of NEPO by Darlington Borough Council, covers sixteen specialist lots, varying from standard carriageway resurfacing to road markings.
Several North East firms, as well as national operators, will also join businesses from across the UK in the framework which has an estimated annual spend value of £24m.
Local firms which have been successful include:
- Henry Williams
- Hanson UK
- Northumbrian Roads
- Rainton Construction
Jeff Alexander, chair of Construction Alliance North East (CAN) stated that “It is encouraging to hear about the more collaborative approach to highways procurement which has been adopted in the case of this framework. By using local firms with local knowledge, it is possible to provide a greater range of value added benefits. This is not only good news for the client, but for the regional economy as a whole.”
