Four bidders confirmed for £5billion South Wales Metro project

untitledBiggest procurement exercise in Wales to move forward with four established bidders

Four bidders have been confirmed for the extensive South Wales Metro project, due to be completed by 2022-23. The project has been named the biggest procurement exercise ever seen in Wales; the value of which could amount to over £5billion once funding from the Welsh Government for the next fifteen years has been factored in.

The four bidders are as follows:

  • KeolisAmey: a joint venture between French transport provider Keolis and public service provider Amey
  • Arriva Trains Wales, owned by Deutsche Bahn, have placed their bid as Arriva Rail Wales
  • MTR Corporation, based in Hong Kong, is one of the world’s leading transport companies with interests spanning the globe
  • Abellio Group, the international section of the Dutch national rail operator, operates bus and rail networks across Europe

The four bidders now have until December 19th to come up with detailed outline solutions for the next phase of the project. This could include the electrification of the core Valley lines and the choice of mode of transport to be supplied – whether train or heavy rail. Bidders are set to spend millions on detailed bids, which are predicted to also include proposals for the delivery of future phases of the project such as the expansion of a North Wales Metro.
