Key artery between the capital and Cornwall to become dual carriageway
Highways England have recently published options to dual 30 miles of the A303 in a £170million scheme which hopes to significantly reduce congestion and accidents in the area.
Currently a mix of dual and single lane carriageway, the route between Sparkford and Ilchester in Somerset is known as an accident hotspot, particularly during the busy summer months. Many holiday makers make the journey to the south-west each year, creating localised congestion on a large scale across this route.
Two routes have been put forward for this scheme, which will be open to public consultation between 15th February and 29th March 2017. The selected route is then due to be announced in autumn 2017 with construction work predicted to commence in 2020.
A second consultation is also underway for the nearby building of a tunnel to service the A303 at Stonehenge and plans to upgrade the A358 between Taunton and Southfields are expected to be revealed shortly.
Highways England Chief Executive Jim O’Sullivan states that the scheme will be excellent news for people travelling to and from the south-west. Public consultations and exhibitions are expected to provide an excellent opportunity to further explain current plans and gather much needed feedback from the local population.
